Mayan Hot Chocolate

This decadent hot chocolate, inspired by the recipe that brought a smile to the cranky Judi Dench in Chocolat, is rich with a kick that is worth experiencing if you’ve never tried it. When the whirlwind of the holidays gets to be too much, make your way into the kitchen and let the aromas of chocolate and cinnamon bring you back to what the holidays are all about. Love, hearth and home.

Ingredients

Pinch of cayenne pepper or to taste
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 tablesspoon cocoa powder
1½ teaspoon sugar
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup light cream
¾ cup whole milk
4 heaping tablespoons of bittersweet chocolate chips

NOTE – the original recipe calls for light cream uncut by milk.
Feel free to make your cup as decadent as you like.

Directions

Combine the cinnamon, cloves, cayenne pepper, vanilla and sugar in a small saucepan and a few tablespoons of the half-and-half. Stir to make a paste.

Over low heat, add the chocolate chips and a few more tablespoons of the half-and-half and stir until melted. Gradually add the rest of the half-and-half, stirring until all the ingredients are well incorporated. Heat over a medium Flame until bubbles appear around the edges. Don’t allow the mixture to boil.

Pour into mugs, sprinkle with cinnamon and serve to a loved one. Curl up by the fire and enjoy.

Serves 2.
